Jay was pleasantly surprised to enjoy a new Hulu show called Derek DelGaudio’s In & Of Itself. A poignant performance of illusion and identity. Shua read Wil Wheaton’s annotated autobiography Still Just a Geek, which paints a very true to life portrait of the actor’s struggles in life.

This week we look back for the 35th anniversary of The Untouchables. It tells the story of Elliot Ness and his quest to take down Al Capone, whose gang used American’s prohibition laws to gain power and money in the 1930’s. Morality themes are just one of the many reasons this movie became legendary. Brian De Palma used his classic filmmaking skills to tell this story in a dramatic and intriguing way. 

And the actors’ performances created the tension that kept the audiences intrigued, even though we knew some of the outcomes of the history. Kevin Costner plays Elliot Ness in one of his early film roles. Ness was the Federal Agent tasked to clean up Chicago in the 30’s

Robert DeNiro plays Al Capone. He really got into his role. He even wore the same type of underwear as Capone. His performance was downright scary as you watched and wondered how far the gangster would go. 

And then there’s Sean Connery. His role as Jim Malone won him his only Oscar. He was a tough beat cop that helped Ness take down the bad guys in the ‘Chicago way’.

It was a wild (and pretty accurate) depiction of the King’s life. Jay got to relive the days of dropping quarters at the Retrocade in Asheville, North Carolina. A two level trip back in time to the arcades of old.

As we get older, we start to look back on the stuff we’ve always wanted to do. Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson taught everyone that this is called your bucket list. On Shua’s birthday, he has decided to share some of his bucket list items. He considers himself very fortunate to have accomplished a lot of his goals in life. 

After reflecting on the wonders of life, it’s time for a little fun and games. Aleaks Jay-Beck leads Shua through a board of categories and questions on a game of Gyp-Parody.

In the United States today marks the day that a revolution gave us our independence from England. Many movies also show us characters that fight against oppression, reminding us that we can stand together and fight for justice for all. This week we celebrate by rebelling!

Whether it’s the rebel alliance or just a breakfast club, it is important to be reminded to treat everyone fairly. We are all on this Earth together!

Jay watched Men With Brooms. A Canadian film with Leslie Nielsen that was recommended by Earbud Mike. If you want to experience a feel good story about curling, this one’s for you! Shua jumped into the next frontier, but not with Star Trek. Instead he has jumped right on board The Orville season 3. With its ramped up budget and timely stories, this is a good one.

But then a lucky casting in the 1980 movie Airplane! as Dr. Rumack put him on a completely different path. After that, he became part of some of the funniest roles in history. Jay finally got to check out Operation: Mincemeat on Netflix and it didn’t disappoint. Have you seen this World War II movie about a real life British operation that helped turn the tide of the war and even gave a famous James Bond author some ideas. Shua experienced Jurassic Park: Dominion in the theaters and was pleasantly surprised how much fun it is. Check it out yourself and be prepared to Enjoy Stuff!

Leslie William Nielsen was born in 1926 in Canada. His father was a Canadian Mountie and his brother eventually became the Deputy Prime Minister. But Leslie caught the acting bug from a famous uncle and began his career acting on a wide variety of TV shows. 

Eventually he was cast as the dashing captain in the 1956 sci-fi movie Forbidden Planet. This first role didn’t necessarily start a lucrative career, but it did give him his start in movies. 

But he also continued some TV roles, such as the lead character in Disney’s Swamp Fox series. 

The manly actor played the Captain of a doomed cruise ship in The Poseidon Adventure and this is what caught the eye of the Zucker brothers. 

When the Zuckers were creating Airplane! in 1980, they wanted a cast of dramatic actors that had been in disaster movies. Nielsen fit that bill. He played Dr. Rumack, who took care of the sick passengers, described how the illness progressed with vivid details, and inspired Ted Stryker with tales of George Zip.

This breakout role dictated the rest of his career as he now played some of the zaniest characters ever created, most notably Lieutenant Frank Drebin. Drebin was the bumbling but dedicated detective of Police Squad, a special division of the Police Department. The unlikely hero made his debut in the short-lived TV series Police Squad, but really became successful in the Naked Gun movies.

After that, Nielsen made dozens of wacky comedies and spoofs and set the bar high for comedians after him. Especially when it comes to giving interviews and controlling bodily functions.

Enjoy Fathers!

Did you have a positive father figure in your life? We hope so. Even though both Jay and Shua had supportive and teacherly dads, they still were influenced by other dads in movies and TV. Back in the 60s, Fred MacMurray brought his Absent Minded Professor to life when he helped the students at Medfield College achieve greatness through flubber.

For the next generation, Robin Williams did the same thing in the remake, Flubber. While neither of these scientists had children, they were good role models to young people and made sure the bad guy got what was coming to him too.

Rick Moranis played a father named Wayne Szalinski, who accidentally shrunk his kids in Honey, I Shrunk the Kids. He may not be responsible when it comes to safely securing his equipment, he would do anything to protect his kids. 

Another Disney Dad that taught valuable lessons was Cornelius Robinson in Meet the Robinsons. Though there was a complex path for Lewis to get Cornelius’s advice, it was still a great message.

Doc Brown didn’t have kids of his own, but I bet he felt like he was raising young Marty McFly through all of their time traveling adventures.  In the end he had a great message that Marty could pass down to all his children that Doc probably visited too. 

And we have some honorable mention ‘dads’ too. These TV scientist help us learn the value of lighting things on fire in our kitchen along with many other lessons.

Now that Jay has revisited Attack of the Clones, he couldn’t help but watch Revenge of the Sith too. Plus, he finally completed the story of LEGO Star Wars, The Skywalker Saga. Now he can get back to work. Shua watched Mike Myers secret society series The Pentaverate on Netflix. It was pure Mike Myers comedy with some fun jokes and thoughtful themes.

Conan the Barbarian made his live action debut in 1984 with a John Milius production of the same name. This was not Schwarzenneger’s first film, but it definitely put him on the road to stardom. Despite some of it’s dated effects and slow pace, it is a beautiful, fantasy epic. 

There were a bevy of Sword and Sorcery films after the success of Conan. But we saw a few in a similar genre before. Disney films like The Sword in the Stone (1963) and the Harryhausen creations like The 7th Voyage of Sinbad (1958) and its sequels and Clash of the Titans (1981). 

Marc Singer brought a different type of barbarian to the fantasy world. His character of Dar in Beastmaster (1982) had the ability to connect and communicate with animals that helped him defeat the evil sorcerer played by Rip Taylor.  Oops! I mean Rip Torn. 

Fantasy lends itself to such a wide variety of movies such as The Sword and the Sorcerer (1982) and a rare, early Disney PG movie called Dragonslayer (1981). These kept the interest in these types of mythical worlds. 

Excalibur (1981) was a medieval tale of King Arthur that brought the ancient tale to the modern screen. It also inspired some cool artwork from Shua’s father. Fire and Ice (1983) featured rotoscoping animation from Ralph Bakshi. These are just a tiny sampling of this genre that was so popular during the 80s. There were so many more!

Journey across the stars on the anniversary of Star Wars Episode II - Attack of the Clones. Jay and Shua remember what it was like in 2002 when we returned to the galaxy far, far away for another prequel and why we still love it. 

Soon, we will get to see Hayden Christiansen reprise his role as Anakin Skywalker, ne Darth Vader, in the new Obi Wan series. But this week we remember when we met him for the first time in the sequel to the prequel Attack of the Clones.

Jay also visited a movie theater to experience the wild, controversial new Marvel movie, Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

It was 20 years ago today, Yoda made Count Dooku pay! Star Wars Episode II - Attack of the Clones premiered in May of 2002 and continued the story of Phantom Menace ten years later. 

Even then the film got mixed reviews, but there is no doubt that there are some absolutely incredible accomplishments made by George. 

Jay and Shua remember all the hype and fun that was to be had during this summer. Plus, we discuss some of the things we love about the movie.
