Shua really enjoyed Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. It had tons of fun, classic Indy action. He absolutely recommends it. Jay has been on a road trip that included Jekyll Island, Skidaway Island, and Honeymoon Island. Gorgeous places, but don’t forget the bug spray.

What we’re Enjoying

Jay took the plunge into the series Orphan Black. The Canadian series explores the ethics of cloning, in a dramatic setting of course. Shua listened to an Audible original story called Space: 1969 set in an alternate reality where John F Kennedy survived and pushed space exploration to the extreme. Narrated by Richard Nixon (Yes, that’s what I said) this comedy starring Natasha Lyonne was like nothing Shua expected.

MCU Location Scout

Jay is back at work scouting MCU filming locations. This time he’s focusing on the newest Disney+ series Marvel’s Secret Invasion. An espionage series set in places all over the world is the perfect opportunity for you to explore Jay’s interactive map on MCULocationScout.com. And don’t forget to tune in to SHIELD: Case Files where Jay and Shua breakdown each episode of the series.

Enjoy Dungeons & Dragons!

Michael Witwer has become the foremost authority on Dungeons & Dragons art and information books. Earlier this year he released Dungeons & Dragons: The Legend of Drizzt Visual Dictionary, and he has 3 more books coming out soon.

First we discuss the recent D&D movie starring Chris Pine and Michelle Rodriguez, plus the other movies as well. Then we get into some of the vintage products that came out when we were growing up.

And finally we go over all the great books coming from Mike (and others) this year. First, The Legend of Drizzt Visual Dictionary , which came out earlier this year, is a highly detailed explanation of RA Salvatore’s original character that has had so many adventures throughout the years.

Next, Mike’s first novel arrives August 29, 2023. It’s a middle grade reader book called Vivian Van Tassel and the Secret of Midnight Lake. A story of a young girl who moves to a town with a lot of monstrous secrets. Inspired by Dungeons & Dragons, any Gen X-er and young reader will thoroughly enjoy this story.

Coming October 3, 2023, Lore & Legends is a follow up to Art & Arcana and a beautiful celebration of the fifth edition of Dungeons & Dragons.

And finally, the follow up to Heroes’ Feast: The Official D&D Cookbook that will be out November 7, 2023; Heroes’ Feast - Flavors of the Multiverse. Just in time for your Thanksgiving feast!

What kind of Dungeons & Dragons character are you? Did you have any of the vintage D&D products? First person that emails me with the subject line, “I am Dungeon Master” will get a special mention on the show.  Let us know. It's time to celebrate Canada Day! July 1 marks a big, national celebration for our neighbors to the north, so Jay and Shua remind us 'mericans about some famous celebrities who have called Canada their home and share some interesting facts along the way. It's time to Enjoy Stuff, eh!

Oh, Canada! We love our upstairs neighbors but sometimes we tend to have the wrong ideas about the second largest nation. Hopefully the boys can clear up a few misconceptions about a beautiful country with some rich history.

What we’re Enjoying

This week Shua completed his summer chores while lazy book reading The Making of Another Major Motion Picture Masterpiece: a Novel by Tom Hanks. It’s a unique take on how a movie gets made, with stories of the origins of characters decades before to the fictional background of how characters got involved in the movie business. Jay is enjoying the most recent season of the Netflix hit Black Mirror. It’s a collection of wild, unexpected stories that will keep you guessing and talking.

Enjoy Canada!

Because Canada is celebrating a national holiday this week, Enjoy Stuff wanted to show our support and friendship by sharing just how dumb Americans are when it comes to the people right next to us. We share a variety of fact about the illustrious country and a little bit of history (that is probably true, if we can trust the internet) And we talk about just a handful of the many public figures that are easily recognized by Americans, who are usually completely unaware that they came from Canada.

And you can check out a classic TechnoRetro Dads episode where we discuss a Canadian comedy featuring our favorite hosers, Bob and Doug McKenzie (featuring the Cereal Connoisseur, Sheldon!)

As we celebrate the father-figures in our lives, we remember some of the ones that made the most difference, ...our TV Dads. Sure they may be goofy and make tons of mistakes, but in the end we knew they loved us...er, their family. But what if we swapped them for a different TV Dad? Jay and Shua mess with the multiverse of dads on Enjoy Stuff!

Got a problem? Go to your TV Dad! But what if Walter White had to help Jan Brady? Ward Cleaver helping the Soprano children? Who knows? They may have been great. We ponder it all this week.

If you’re wondering why Jay is wearing a trenchcoat and fedora it’s because he’s gone noir. After reading a cool book on the genre, he’s been revisiting great movies like Chinatown and LA Confidential. And make sure to check out the interesting story of the making of the Godfather with The Offer. Shua found a TechnoRetro game on his iPhone with the updated version of Lemmings. How many will you need to sacrifice in order to win?

Enjoy TV!

TV Dads were certainly a big influence on us growing up. Despite the many really dumb things that they did, in the end they were there for us. Even if they were just on TV. But in honor of Father’s Day this year, we ponder what some iconic television families would have been like if we swapped out dads from other shows. It’s a crazy, fatherly experiment on Enjoy Stuff.

Stock up on those rations and race to that bomb shelter, because it's Global Thermonuclear War! Or is it? Jay and Shua look back on 40 years of the classic movie WarGames with Matthew Broderick.

WarGames not only kept us on the edge of our seat wondering if WW3 was about to start, but it also helped to shape policies and events in our nation’s government. Come with us as we revisit a dramatic 80s cold war movie.

What we’re Enjoying

Shua recently finished another John Scalzi novel called ‘Redshirts’, which is about exactly what you’d think….those poor bastards from science fiction that are always getting killed on away missions. But this one has a twist. They begin to realize it. Audiobook narrated by Wil Wheaton. Jay finally returned to Pandora and watched the visually rich Avatar: The Way of Water. He agreed that it was a sight to behold.

Enjoy Movies!

1983 was a scary time in our country. We seemed to constantly be on pins and needles wondering if the Soviets were going to start an all-out nuclear war. But it was an exciting time too. The personal computer was making its way into our homes and giving us access to the outside world.

That is a brilliant recipe for a dramatic movie. Wargames became that movie, where a young computer hacker named David Lightman, played by a very young Matthew Broderick, who only had two acting credits to his name before this movie, unknowingly breaks into the military’s computer system and nearly starts World War 3.

It was very well executed and made us question the possibilities of the future. It even made President Reagan a little nervous. After watching it, he requested an investigation to research the dangers of hacking and how we could take precautions against it.

And of course, it give Wade Watts an interesting challenge to accomplish in the Ready Player One novel by Earnest Cline.

Have you experienced WarGames? Did you like experimenting with computers? Who, exactly, are you going to Paris with? Parodies and comedy are great, but has there ever been one place that specializes in only those classics? Look no further than Dr. Demento! He’s the bearded, top hat-wearing radio DJ that made Weird Al famous and Shaving Cream naughty. This week we look back on all the laughs.

What we’re Enjoying

Shua is enjoying some Mayhem! But he’s trying to relax because he’s just watching The Muppets Mayhem on Disney+. It’s a pretty good interpretation of our favorite rock band, Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem. All while trying to record their first album. Jay is running a local Memorial Day 5k, probably as you read this! Isn’t it good when we can stay fit and active?

Enjoy Music!

Dr. Demento was filling the radio airwaves with funny songs for years. His real name is Barrett Hanson, but we all know him as Dr. Demento. During the 70s and 80s he had a syndicated radio show where he played many song parodies, stand-up, comedy, routines, and recorded skits. But that really doesn’t even come close to describing all of the crazy kinds of humor he had on his demented show. This week, Jay and Shua revisit some of their favorites and talk about what made it so funny.

Sci-Fi Saturdays/MCU Location Scout

Jay has updated MCU Location Scout with new locations from Guardians of the Galaxy vol 3. It’s a great rabbit hole to explore. And also, don’t forget to read his articles called Sci-Fi Saturdays on Retrozap.com

Enjoy Movies!

Return of the Jedi premiered 40 years ago this week. As Star Wars fans, we were highly anticipating the final chapter of the saga. And also preparing ourselves for never seeing another movie in the theaters. Regardless of what came after, 1983 was quite a year to indulge in all things Star Wars.

We talk about the transition from Revenge to Return in the title. Ultimately, it was the perfect change, but we got some rare products before George made the final decision.

Did you know that Jedi was one of only a handful of films that made some premieres in 70mm? 164 different theaters around the country got the chance to share this innovative format for us. Even if we weren’t always aware of what kind of awesomeness we were getting.

Jay and Shua share stories of seeing the movie on opening weekend, including the theaters where they saw them. While some of the theaters may have now been sent to the great Hollywood Heaven in the sky, we still have the memories.

Join us for a game of Jedi-opardy as Jay asks Shua some trivia questions centered around the actors and actresses featured in Return of the Jedi.

Enjoy Stuff: Just 'V'isiting

Join Jovial Jay and Shua as they look back at the iconic miniseries “V” with its sci-fi story and important messages on a Lite episode of Enjoy Stuff: A TechnoRetro Podcast!

In 1983 NBC broadcast a chilling miniseries that featured seemingly friendly aliens arriving on Earth with the promise of working with humans for a cooperative society. But that of course all turned around when they started eating us. What a bunch of party-poopers! Jovial Jay and Shua revisit this historic and still timely miniseries and how it influenced them on a special Lite episode of Enjoy Stuff: A TechnoRetro Podcast.

Enjoy Miniseries!

V was not the first miniseries, but it was a first for science-fiction lovers. Following hot on the heels of the Star Wars trend to turn everything into sci-fi, this miniseries shocked audiences, and created a franchise fo multiple television series, including two separate episodic series. You can read Jovial Jay's Sci-Fi Saturdays post on the original miniseries, right here.

What we’re Enjoying

When Jay’s power goes out, he gets to dig into a book. The Big Goodbye: Chinatown and the Last Years of Hollywood by Sam Wasson tells some stories about one of the most classic eras of Hollywood and the drama around it. Shua is deep into season 2 of the Netflix series Shadow and Bone. He describes it as a ‘fantasy steam-punk’, which has a very unique feel.

Enjoy Games!

Board games have been around way longer than you realize. But are some of those historic games still being played? First we look back at some of the oldest games in human history that are still being played today. Dice has definitely been around the longest, dating all the way back to prehistoric times. But if you want something with an actual board, that would be the Royal Game of Ur, which has been played since 2650 BCE! Backgammon may no longer hold the title of oldest, but it sure has been around for a long time. There’s even an annual, world-wide game award from Germany, called the Spiel des Jahres. One game a year has been picked as the best since 1978.

There’s some great games that we grew up with that may not make it on the Spiel des Jahres list, but they were fun nevertheless. Classic, mainstream games like Monopoly, Trivial Pursuit, Mousetrap, Yahtzee, and more start our board game discussion with some nostalgia.

But it’s Star Wars month, so we pick some of the Star Wars favorites from the last 46 years. From the original Escape From Death Star game to the heyday of Revenge of the Sith products, these classic games give us so many varieties of game play. Listen in to see if your favorites made the list.

Which board games do you Enjoy playing? What Star Wars games would you add to the list? First person that emails me with the subject line, “Fair and square” will get a special mention on the show.  Let us know.
