Enjoy Stuff: A TechnoRetro Podcast

Greetings, Programs!

Sweeter than Sugar Frosted Flakes and more lovable than the Muppet Babies, Moms deserve as much credit as they can get, so JediShua and shazbazzar revisit some of the things that made childhood special -- thanks to their Moms.

SuperFriend MICHAEL PRICE talks about his latest addition to the LEGO Star Wars canon with the first episode of The New Yoda Chronicles as well as the shows and movies that inspired him in his retro days.  (And shaz still thinks that JEK-14 would make a great addition to the GRID.)

PLUS: Loads of talk on topics like Tony the Tiger, Skeeter the Muppet, Howie Mandel, Ray Harryhausen, NASA, and an update on the Jim Henson Creature Shop Challenge.  You can be a part of the discussion as well by contacting us through email at podcast@TechnoRetroDads.com or leave a voice mail at (209)878-7323 (TR-TRDAD). On Cinco de Mayo and the celebration has not yet begun to wane.  Download and listen early this Monday morning to take advantage of the news and deals still in action on the 5th of May (because tomorrow will feel like Revenge of the Sixth)!

SuperFriend SHELDON comes back to pass judgment on Froot Loops in more than just a simple taste test, lending his expertise to the continuing Science Project relative to the different (or not-so-different) flavors of Froot Loops according to their colors.

PLUS: Because Kermmit asked, JediShua and shazbazzar provide a rundown of some of this past week’s news and even many of the things we saw or experienced on May the Fourth!  You can be a part of the discussion as well by contacting us through email at podcast@TechnoRetroDads.com or leave a voice mail at (209)878-7323 (TR-TRDAD). Greetings, Programs!

The TechnoRetro Dads shake things up a bit for their first birthday celebration as they embark on a second #TechnoRetro year with more favorite toys, cereal, cartoons, games, movies, and memories to come with some additional chatter about things that matter (maybe not so much).  A few friends stop by for the fun and several others call in with well-wishes on this historic occasion.  (OK, we may be a bit full of ourselves with all this hype, but we did have a great time on this episode.)

Don’t forget to join in the discussion in the Lazy Book Club at forum.TechnoRetroDads.com and get a free audiobook download and free 30-day trial of audible.com through TechnoRetro Dads.  You can pick Princess Labelmaker to the Rescue by Tom Angleberger and get ready for next week’s discussion.

Canadian Superfriends Mike and Sheldon regale us with tales of the twelve inch manly man Big Jim and his friends Big Josh, Big Jack, and a whole P.A.C.K. of shirtless action figures from Mattel.  T-Bird stops by the shazbazzar spaceport for his report on the TechnoRetro Science Project with some sad news for Chris Luby...

Plus: Lando pulls out of a “STAR” franchise, sugary cereals draw the ire of morning “news” programs, and much more skeksiness than you can find in your average podcast.

The first official Monday of TechnoRetro Dads “Year Two” has arrived, so tune in and turn on, ear buds!

You thought your precious Dads were safe from the scheming of the Aprilinanity. Nobody is free from the ludicrousness of this day of absurdity and nonsense.  Equipped with silliness and senselessness, the Dadnappers have effectively taken away the TechnoRetro ones on this anniversary of their origin.  Perhaps this preposterous poppycock will persist for days, weeks, even months....

Yet fear not, fool-loving friends, for the youth of today have seized the situation and are capitalizing on the case of the captured Dads.  JediAri, shabbeyzzar, Little “A”s, and shazzyluke are on the scene and are using this opportunity to pull a little tomfoolery of their own.

So tune in for this extra-special episode of TechnoRetro Dads KIDS!

Are you one of the fortunate ones beginning Spring Break this beautiful Monday morning?  JediShua and shazbazzar both begin their break with sunshine, flowers, and unicorns.

But all is not a bed of roses. IOI has the upper hand and Wade wades deep into the swamp of sadness and nearly...oops...wrong book.  JAMIE returns for Level Two of Ready Player One by Ernest Cline in the second edition of the Lazy Book Club and no one even mentioned R2-DJ at Ogden Morrow’s birthday bash. Be sure to chime in with your thoughts in the Lazy Book Club at forum.TechnoRetroDads.com. Whether they were at the arcade or on your Atari at home (sorry, Odyssey 2, Glen and Luby), the classic games of our youth provided more than entertainment with a joystick and TV screen, but even spawned their own musical genre: GameTunes.

This week, JediShua and shazbazzar welcome Glen and Brian from High Adventure for a special Music & History Lesson episode of TechnoRetro Dads.  With some fan favorite tunes in tribute of Space Invaders, Pac-Man, and Donkey Kong, our time together had a way of expanding past our usual 77 minutes.  But it’s all in good fun when we’re talking #TechnoRetro with our ear buds.  We challenge you to NOT talk back to us while listening to this week’s episode.

And since you’ll be talking to us anyway (and getting strange looks from people who wonder just who in the world you’re talking to), be sure to send in your feedback.  You can play along with us through the TechnoRetro Cereal Challenge, the current Science Project, and the Lazy Book Club, you can lend your thoughts (and voice) to all sorts of #TechnoRetro goodness! JediShua is determined to rescue the Kobayashi Maru while shazbazzar continues to battle Hoth-like conditions in the south, but that’s not important right now.

The TechnoRetro Dads are in the midst of a thirty year-old debate over one of the most controversial topics of our generation. Undaunted by the challenge, both shazbazzar and JediShua put up the best arguments for each side of the Great Bounty Hunter Pronunciation Dilemma.

Plus: news about Star Wars, preorders for “Retro Action” figures, Robotland in Seoul, unexpected history lessons, and more talk of Atari (we may be on to something here).

All this and more on the very political (not really) Presidents’ Day episode of TechnoRetro Dads.

You never know what you will hear on TechnoRetro Dads.  This episode was recorded (mostly) in the shazbazzar family room when JediShua and Mrs. Shua came down for a weekend visit.  You will hear dogs barking, panting, and running on the tile floor.  You will hear televisions and video games being played.  You will hear voices in the background.  Why is this episode scrambled with these echoes of present and past?  Because we were having a blast being together as a big, happy, TechnoRetro family!  You can hear that, too!

But the regular segments are packed in this podcast as well.  History Lessons (with a reminder that Valentine’s Day is this week), a TechnoRetro Challenge, Toys in the Attic (or shazbazzar spaceport, to be more precise), and even a bit (or byte) of News.

So plug in your ear buds and join in the fun as we fend off invaders from space, score touchdowns, blast asteroids, and use our best combat tactics with tanks and planes.  We are doing our part to make your Mondays better, so enjoy!

The excitement of yesterday has come and gone, and again, the present became the past and what was the news is now history.  The groundhog predicted the weather and Atreyu lost Artax in New Jersey.  Although there was much weeping and wailing during and after the Big Game Sunday night, it could not quench the excitement following a fantastic Saturday TechnoRetro Reunion (more about that later).

But the game goes on, ear buds!  We got right back up on that horse (excuse the pun) and lined-up our favorite pieces at “GO!” and took a look back at one of our favorite games, Monopoly.  The Flintstones/Pebbles TechnoRetro Challenge is almost over (so submit your thoughts) and a brand new Science Project is in the works as we start getting responses about the fruity flavors and bright colors of Froot Loops.  Chopper is in the News and and NASA is History in 77 minutes of therapy for Broncos fans.

Is JEK-14 more than a clone?  Does he remind anyone else of Steve Austin, the Six Million Dollar Man?  With that arm, it just might be possible.

With Mike from Looking away to the Horizon and Chris from Star Wars Kidscast, JediShua and shazbazzar discuss the many finer points of LEGO Star Wars: The Yoda Chronicles.  What isn’t to love about these LEGO Star Wars specials?

Included in this suspiciously transhuman episode of TechnoRetro Dads is news from CES, an announcement about VSI, and the release of the new documentary, I Know that Voice!  Sit in front of the TV for some Saturday morning cartoons with Tom, Jerry, Muscles, Spike, Snap, Crackle, and Pop.  Discover reading (and even singing) computers way back in the 70s.  Revisit Jaime Sommers and Steve Austin in their iconic, bionic roles.  Plus Hungry, Hungry Hippos, a Tonka Jeep, and Eric Bauza as Chris Rock!

What did you get for Christmas?  We loaded up (like we do every year) and had lots of fun.  But not just at Christmas time -- we have had a great year in 2013.  We take some time to revisit what happened in 2013 and reveal some of our expectations for 2014, and while everything has not been all shiny this year, we have high hopes for the year to come.

We also talk about the upcoming Annie Awards and the categories and nominees in our News segment.  In the History Lesson, we turn back the clock to the week after Christmas in the 70s and 80s to see what was going on while we were playing with the Star Wars toys Santa brought us back then.

The final results of the first season of the TechnoRetro Bowl are in and we celebrate the lopsided victory of an undefeated team.  Congratulations to Craig!

With a bit of a chill in the air and the leaves leaving their branches for a spot on the lawn, memories get revived as we head into the holiday season (even if shaz has some confusion in his memories).  Before you get into your work week, take a bit of a break with TechnoRetro Dads in this special episode remembering The Star Wars Holiday Special as we prepare for the 35th anniversary of the one-time showing on CBS.

Our good friend Jorbex stops by for a chat about an old podcast prank, SKot from StarWarsHolidaySpecial.com tells us about his memories of the Holiday Special, and Paul Bateman from the Star Wars Influences podcast on ShotGlass Digital reveals some interesting information about how Ralph McQuarrie got involved in one of the most hyped parts of that galaxy far, far away.

All this with News, History Lessons, and a bit of fun packed in for good measure makes this a TechnoRetro Dads you won’t want to miss!

Halloween is over, the Christmas catalogs are hitting the mailboxes, and you need to download TechnoRetro Dads.  Whether you are looking for a princess dress, a TMNT playset, or even a Honda Scooter, you will want to hear what is happening with some of your favorite franchises from the 70s and 80s as JediShua and shazbazzar climb into the Way-Back Machine again to drum up some memories of those days gone by.

Is it a bunny or a vampire?  Did Death come knocking at your door last Thursday night?  Why does a squirrel hang out with the salmon mousse?  These questions and more await you in this early November episode of TechnoRetro Dads!

On top of that, Bill Nye gives Sheldon a try, Arndt is out, and we give Sega a little bit of air time.

Do Mondays sometimes make you feel like you have rocks in your head?  Then get up and get your earbuds -- you are going to want to give this episode a listen as early as possible as we take an improbable journey into the old School House with some sedimentary, metamorphic, and maybe even igneous geological samples from the groovalicious past and not even recent formations.  JediShua and shazbazzar drum up some tunes, but not before getting the word out about the latest news...

Get a glimpse of Star Wars: REBELS tonight on Disney XD.  Wow!  No one saw that one coming!

Then, take another TechnoRetro Challenge during Monster Cereals Month as the Goolies groove out their tunes in classic cartoon style.

If you remember the tunes that were fun, funny, entertaining, and even educational, you will be sure to dig the October 7 episode of TechnoRetro Dads.

If you could choose your own adventure after waking up eight years into the future (though you yourself are the same age), would you go back to 1978 or remain in 1986?  The shazlings, the Shualings, and Chris from SMore Geeks all join us on this episode to address this all-important question from Flight of the Navigator.

From sticker collecting books to jumping the Snake River with Evel Knievel, the adventures never end when JediShua and shazbazzar get pink with Henry Mancini and Blake Edwards remember the days of their past with cartoons, cereal, toys, movies, songs, and then go back to the future (or the present) to discuss some of what is happening today with those same things.  So whether you are interested in toys, games, movies, TV shows, or even books and “lazy books”, you will find something on TechnoRetro Dads this Labor Day.
