40 years ago the video game industry crashed faster than a Combat bi-plane. What was the cause? Was it really because of the legendary E.T. game? Jay and Shua remember what was happening and how they probably caused the whole thing.
Join us on a trip back to an adaptation of a popular Japanese cartoon that got our imagination flowing! This is Battle of the Planets!

What we’re Enjoying In preparation for the third season, Jay has been re-watching Ted Lasso. it’s still a great show with characteristics that are perfect for re-watches. The new season is coming in just a couple weeks. Shua really enjoyed Ant-man and the wasp Quantumania. He knows how to enjoy things without listening to the naysayers. And that’s what Enjoy Stuff is all about!
Sci-Fi Saturdays/MCU Location Scout A very fun and entertaining Star Trek movie came out in 1999. And it was called Galaxy Quest. This week Jay releases his 200th Sci-Fi Saturdays article spotlighting this great homage to the Trek universe. Read and enjoy this and all of the other 199 articles too. Enjoy Video Games! In 1983 the video game industry was at its highest point so far. They were earning more than $3 billion with home consoles and cartridges that we could enjoy whenever we wanted. But a poor business model which included releasing too many games, many of which were low quality, and a saturated market with companies coming from every room of the metaphorical Adventure dungeon, meant that the bubble was about to burst. Legend has it that the release of the E.T. video cartridge in 1983 was the cause. But in reality there were many different aspects that led to a big change. Luckily it found ways to recover and is now a booming business still today.
Did you enjoy the E.T. video game? Did you notice the crash in ‘83? Did you read all of these shownotes? First person that emails me with the subject line, “Atari, phone home” will get a special mention on the show. Let us know. What we’re Enjoying Shua drank the Kool-Aid (or would it be ‘eats the fungus’) and watched the HBO Max hit series “The Last of Us”. This not-quite-a-zombie series includes great action, suspense, and character development. It stars Mandalorian’s Pedro Pascal and Game of Thrones’ Bella Ramsey. If you enjoy dystopian post-apocalyptic shows, you’re gonna love this! Jay started replaying the relatively recent and well-received video game, Jedi: Fallen Order. It has a great story, terrific graphics. And there have been some references in recent episodes of The Bad Batch on Disney+. Check them both out!
Sci-Fi Saturdays/MCU Location Scout Brad Bird’s iconic classic The Iron Giant is the film on the docket this week on Sci-Fi Saturdays. Meaningful themes, great performances, and cool, stylized art design. Check it out on Sci-Fi Saturdays on Retrozap.com. Plus, stay tuned for the classic Star Trek homage Galaxy Quest, coming this Saturday.
Enjoy Cartoons! With the success of Star Wars in 1977, entertainment creators were looking to cash in on the newest sci-fi craze. One company scored big when they bought the rights to a Japanese animated series called Gatchaman.
Though, it wasn’t quite the feel they were going for. So as it was adapted to American TV, some big changes created almost a different show altogether. Some of the overall story was changed with some violence and style of dialogue was made more kid-friendly.
Because some was just cut altogether, certain segments with a very familiar looking robot, named 7-Zark-7, was added as a narrator to tie things together, especially after the drastic changes.
It seemed to all work though, because it became very popular, and even helped future Anime reach the mainstream, such as Voltron and MASK. It’s success also led to a live-action Japanese movie called Gatchaman in 2013.
With all this great Anime fun on the show, Jay decided to quiz Shua with his knowledge by playing the game “Anime or Sushi?” How will Shua do? Does he know his mouth food from his eye candy? Test your knowledge and see how you do!
Are you a fan of Battle of the Planets? Do you know your sushi? Did you read all of these shownotes? First person that emails me with the subject line, “Always Five! What we’re Enjoying Jay found some very cool and inspirational Australian movies. Seriously Red and The Pretty One are fun and entertaining, but also have great messages on self-image. Definitely worth checking out. Shua watched a recent Netflix series from Britain called Cunk on Earth. A very condensed (and ridiculous) history of our planet starring Diane Morgan giving her unique take on this hunk of rock we live on.
Sci-Fi Saturdays/MCU Location Scout The Thirteenth Floor was a less well known sci-fi virtual reality flick than The Matrix, but there are some great aspects to it as well. Check it out on Sci-Fi Saturdays on Retrozap.com. Plus, stay tuned for one of the greatest animated stories of all time, The Iron Giant, coming this Saturday.
Enjoy Life! One way to make Valentine’s Day special for that someone you love is to plan a retro-movie-themed date. Last year we had some fun nights planned that surely led to life-long relationships. This year’s episode is more of a cautionary tale. We give you some great themes, with some warnings of what you should absolutely avoid (unless you’re trying to get rid of them)
Themes include: “The Sixteen Candles” “The Back to the Future” “The Breakfast Club” “The Brendan Fraser” “The Die Hard” “The Splash” “The Arnold Schwarzenegger”
Have you made these mistakes on dates? What other things should we all avoid? Did you read all of these shownotes? If you ever want to know how to use math, physics, and science to build a lava moat around your house, this is the book for you! Jay is enjoying the latest Peacock murder-mystery series Poker Face, starring Natasha Lyonne and written and directed by Rian Johnson. It’s a fun, unique take on the weekly murder mystery.
