Wind up your radio for a look back at the king of wacky radio, Dr. Demento! Enjoy Stuff looks back at the zaniness of the parodies and comedy bits he played and what made us laugh so hard. From Fish Heads to Dead Puppies, it's time to get Demented!

Parodies and comedy are great, but has there ever been one place that specializes in only those classics? Look no further than Dr. Demento! He’s the bearded, top hat-wearing radio DJ that made Weird Al famous and Shaving Cream naughty. This week we look back on all the laughs.

What we’re Enjoying

Shua is enjoying some Mayhem! But he’s trying to relax because he’s just watching The Muppets Mayhem on Disney+. It’s a pretty good interpretation of our favorite rock band, Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem. All while trying to record their first album. Jay is running a local Memorial Day 5k, probably as you read this! Isn’t it good when we can stay fit and active?

Enjoy Music!

Dr. Demento was filling the radio airwaves with funny songs for years. His real name is Barrett Hanson, but we all know him as Dr. Demento. During the 70s and 80s he had a syndicated radio show where he played many song parodies, stand-up, comedy, routines, and recorded skits. But that really doesn’t even come close to describing all of the crazy kinds of humor he had on his demented show. This week, Jay and Shua revisit some of their favorites and talk about what made it so funny.

Premieres to Paraphernalia, we remember what made a difference in our lives. And Jay quizzes Shua on Jedi-opardy. All that from a certain point of view on Enjoy Stuff!

Return with us (Or Revenge with us. We’re not picky) to a time when Ewoks were new and Jabba the Hutt was a mysterious new creature that we couldn’t wait to learn about. It’s the 40th anniversary of Star Wars - Return of the Jedi!

What we’re Enjoying

Jay watched a fun, crazy Bollywood movie called Polite Society. A heist, action, comedy that is a ton of fun to check out. Shua just got back from Punta de Mita, Mexico where he actually tried to relax for a few days (and almost even succeeded a couple of times)

Jay has updated MCU Location Scout with new locations from Guardians of the Galaxy vol 3. It’s a great rabbit hole to explore. And also, don’t forget to read his articles called Sci-Fi Saturdays on Retrozap.com

Enjoy Movies!

Return of the Jedi premiered 40 years ago this week. As Star Wars fans, we were highly anticipating the final chapter of the saga. And also preparing ourselves for never seeing another movie in the theaters. Regardless of what came after, 1983 was quite a year to indulge in all things Star Wars.

We talk about the transition from Revenge to Return in the title. Ultimately, it was the perfect change, but we got some rare products before George made the final decision.

Did you know that Jedi was one of only a handful of films that made some premieres in 70mm? 164 different theaters around the country got the chance to share this innovative format for us. Even if we weren’t always aware of what kind of awesomeness we were getting.

Jay and Shua share stories of seeing the movie on opening weekend, including the theaters where they saw them. While some of the theaters may have now been sent to the great Hollywood Heaven in the sky, we still have the memories.

Join us for a game of Jedi-opardy as Jay asks Shua some trivia questions centered around the actors and actresses featured in Return of the Jedi.

Enjoy Stuff: Just 'V'isiting

Join Jovial Jay and Shua as they look back at the iconic miniseries “V” with its sci-fi story and important messages on a Lite episode of Enjoy Stuff: A TechnoRetro Podcast!

In 1983 NBC broadcast a chilling miniseries that featured seemingly friendly aliens arriving on Earth with the promise of working with humans for a cooperative society. But that of course all turned around when they started eating us. What a bunch of party-poopers! Jovial Jay and Shua revisit this historic and still timely miniseries and how it influenced them on a special Lite episode of Enjoy Stuff: A TechnoRetro Podcast.

Enjoy Miniseries!

V was not the first miniseries, but it was a first for science-fiction lovers. Following hot on the heels of the Star Wars trend to turn everything into sci-fi, this miniseries shocked audiences, and created a franchise fo multiple television series, including two separate episodic series. You can read Jovial Jay's Sci-Fi Saturdays post on the original miniseries, right here.

Jay and Shua try to get the highest spin as they channel the Force on Enjoy Stuff!

What we’re Enjoying

When Jay’s power goes out, he gets to dig into a book. The Big Goodbye: Chinatown and the Last Years of Hollywood by Sam Wasson tells some stories about one of the most classic eras of Hollywood and the drama around it. Shua is deep into season 2 of the Netflix series Shadow and Bone. He describes it as a ‘fantasy steam-punk’, which has a very unique feel.

Enjoy Games!

Board games have been around way longer than you realize. But are some of those historic games still being played? First we look back at some of the oldest games in human history that are still being played today. Dice has definitely been around the longest, dating all the way back to prehistoric times. But if you want something with an actual board, that would be the Royal Game of Ur, which has been played since 2650 BCE! Backgammon may no longer hold the title of oldest, but it sure has been around for a long time. There’s even an annual, world-wide game award from Germany, called the Spiel des Jahres. One game a year has been picked as the best since 1978.

There’s some great games that we grew up with that may not make it on the Spiel des Jahres list, but they were fun nevertheless. Classic, mainstream games like Monopoly, Trivial Pursuit, Mousetrap, Yahtzee, and more start our board game discussion with some nostalgia.

But it’s Star Wars month, so we pick some of the Star Wars favorites from the last 46 years. From the original Escape From Death Star game to the heyday of Revenge of the Sith products, these classic games give us so many varieties of game play. Listen in to see if your favorites made the list.

Which board games do you Enjoy playing? What Star Wars games would you add to the list? First person that emails me with the subject line, “Fair and square” will get a special mention on the show.  Let us know. What we’re Enjoying

Joe joins the boys to share what he’s been enjoying. He likes the Showtime series Yellowjackets, which includes cheerleaders and cannibals. Yum! Shua recently read a book by John Scalzi called “Lock-In” about a world 20 years after a pandemic that left a large number of people paralyzed, but fully aware, but giving them robot bodies to live a semi-normal life.  And there’s a murder mystery. Jay is in the midst of a new series on Peacock called Mrs. Davis. A mysterious A.I., a nun, and a quest for the Holy Grail. We’d explain more, but it’s so complex and crazy that it’s a fun ride.

What we’re Enjoying

Jay had a blast with the Washington DC metro Area Star Wars Collecting Club at a screening of the 40th anniversary of Return of the Jedi. Jedi is always a great film to revisit and it fills you with all the feels of being a kid again. What we’re Enjoying

Shua had tons of fun at the Super Mario Bros movie. It had countless nods to the games over the years. The story and performances were very entertaining. It felt like a video game in itself. Jay finally headed to Middle Earth for Amazon Prime’s interpretation of JRR Tolkien in the Rings of Power series. He felt that it is a rich story with an epic setting.

Enjoy Birthdays!

Birthdays are fun when you are being entertained by something you Enjoy. And this year, Enjoy Stuff is digging into the Star Trek universe. Since 1966 the characters and stories of the franchise have given us so much to hope for in the future. But it has always been more than just “that sci-fi show”. It has also been an inspiration for social change about important topics. Today we can revisit all the past Treks, but also anticipate all the current and upcoming projects which continue to excite us. Set engines to warp factor 9 and come along with us.

Jay loves Bob Odenkirk, so he was for sure going to check out his new series on AMC+, called Lucky Hank. It’s not a lighthearted series, but it gets you thinking and has some great performances. Shua really liked the Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. It’s a lot like a classic D&D campaign, plus a lot of fun.

Enjoy Rabbit Holes!

It’s our 100th episode! For all those shows we consistently find our way down rabbit holes. But this week we celebrate them. First, we reminisce about some of our favorite episodes and why we like them…and what they remind us of…and oh, I should fix that door hinge….Uh, sorry.

Shua got his TechnoRetro action on when he watched the new Apple+ Tetris movie starring Taron Edgerton. It was a fun, dramatized version of the origins of the worldwide popularity of the legendary game. Jay tuned into Amazon Prime to watch Pinball: The Man Who Saved the Game. Who knew we almost lost pinball forever? Luckily, one guy’s love for the game brought the modern world’s attention back to the flippers, springs, and bumpers.

What we’re Enjoying

Jay has been catching up on films nominated for this year’s Oscars. This week he watched the surprises in Martin McDonagh’s Banshees of Inisherin. He enjoyed the themes and symbolism in the wild story of two friends whose relationship suddenly changes and fingers are threatened. Shua surprises absolutely nobody by enjoying season 3 of The Mandalorian. It’s feeling very Star Wars to him. What do you think?

Enjoy Movies!

In 2011, Ernest Cline released his homage to the pop-culture he grew up with, Ready Player One. This dystopian world became obsessed with everything 80’s after rich, white guy James Halliday dies and offers his fortune to anyone who can crack the clues in his contest.

It became very popular among Generation X and we were all excited when it was announced that it was going to be adapted into a movie, and directed by Steven Spielberg even! But how could they get the juicy reference bits from the book into a film? The result was the 2018 movie of the same name.

First we break down some of the major changes from the book to the film and why we think they made those changes. Then we talk about whether the movie was a successful adaptation from different points of view.

And then we create our very own Easter egg hunt. What pop-culture references would we use for the world to solve? We’ll lay it all out for you so you can try to solve the riddles of the egg.

Shua was lucky enough to enjoy his daughter’s high school musical “The Drowsy Chaperone”, a musical within a comedy. It was a laugh out loud performance that entertained him and made him proud of his youngest. Jay is on the road and exploring Tallulah Gorge State Park in Georgia. It’s a beautiful area and also the setting for a location in Avengers: Infinity War. He’ll keep exploring our great nation and Enjoy Stuff.

Jay popped on a little Hulu and checked out the latest Mel Brooks property, which is a sequel to one of his classic movies; History of the World part II. A series that takes the idea of the historical sketch comedy and keeps the idea going for the next generation. Shua and his wife took the plunge and sniffed out Cocaine Bear. This crazy, over-the-top interpretation of a true story with gore, action, and dark humor entertained them and made them laugh. If you dig that combination, check it out.

25 years ago in The Big Lebowski, Jeff Bridges artfully crafted one of the most memorable characters in movies. The Dude was just trying to live his life, drinking white Russians, and bowling until he gets wrapped up in a complicated case, with a lotta ins, a lotta outs, a lotta what-have-yous. Enjoy Stuff presents The Big Lebowski

Jeff Bridges is The Dude, or Duder, his Dudeness, or El Duderino; if you’re not into the whole brevity thing. This week we look back on the Coen brothers classic, The Big Lebowski on its 25th anniversary.

What we’re Enjoying

Shua has been thoroughly enjoying season 3 of Picard. It’s not only action packed, but a nice homage to the Next Generation series. Jay is exploring the area around his new house. He visited Monocacy Battlefield National Park, which is the site of an important battle in the Civil War that saved the US capitol. American history can be valuable to learn

Enjoy Movies!

The Big Lebowski (1998) has developed such a big following in its 25 years, that it has become a legendary film. While not the most successful of the Coen brothers movies, it may be the most popular. And that’s because of the memorable quotes, the unique humor, and the performances of so many Hollywood icons. This week we break down so many of the aspects that make this piece of art more popular than a Jackie Treehorn movie. Enjoy Stuff thinks The Big Lebowski is a must-see film. …of course, that’s just our opinion, man.

What we’re Enjoying

In preparation for the third season, Jay has been re-watching Ted Lasso. it’s still a great show with characteristics that are perfect for re-watches. The new season is coming in just a couple weeks. Shua really enjoyed Ant-man and the wasp Quantumania. He knows how to enjoy things without listening to the naysayers. And that’s what Enjoy Stuff is all about!

A very fun and entertaining Star Trek movie came out in 1999. And it was called Galaxy Quest. Check it out on Sci-Fi Saturdays on Retrozap.com. Plus, stay tuned for the classic Star Trek homage Galaxy Quest, coming this Saturday.

Enjoy Video Games!

In 1983 the video game industry was at its highest point so far. They were earning more than $3 billion with home consoles and cartridges that we could enjoy whenever we wanted. But a poor business model which included releasing too many games, many of which were low quality, and a saturated market with companies coming from every room of the metaphorical Adventure dungeon, meant that the bubble was about to burst. Legend has it that the release of the E.T. video cartridge in 1983 was the cause. But in reality there were many different aspects that led to a big change. Luckily it found ways to recover and is now a booming business still today.

What we’re Enjoying

Shua drank the Kool-Aid (or would it be ‘eats the fungus’) and watched the HBO Max hit series “The Last of Us”. This not-quite-a-zombie series includes great action, suspense, and character development. It stars Mandalorian’s Pedro Pascal and Game of Thrones’ Bella Ramsey. If you enjoy dystopian post-apocalyptic shows, you’re gonna love this! Jay started replaying the relatively recent and well-received video game, Jedi: Fallen Order. It has a great story, terrific graphics. And there have been some references in recent episodes of The Bad Batch on Disney+. Check them both out!

Enjoy Cartoons!

With the success of Star Wars in 1977, entertainment creators were looking to cash in on the newest sci-fi craze. One company scored big when they bought the rights to a Japanese animated series called Gatchaman.

Though, it wasn’t quite the feel they were going for. So as it was adapted to American TV, some big changes created almost a different show altogether. Some of the overall story was changed with some violence and style of dialogue was made more kid-friendly.

Because some was just cut altogether, certain segments with a very familiar looking robot, named 7-Zark-7, was added as a narrator to tie things together, especially after the drastic changes.

It seemed to all work though, because it became very popular, and even helped future Anime reach the mainstream, such as Voltron and MASK. It’s success also led to a live-action Japanese movie called Gatchaman in 2013.

With all this great Anime fun on the show, Jay decided to quiz Shua with his knowledge by playing the game “Anime or Sushi?” How will Shua do? Does he know his mouth food from his eye candy? Test your knowledge and see how you do!

What we’re Enjoying

Jay found some very cool and inspirational Australian movies. Seriously Red and The Pretty One are fun and entertaining, but also have great messages on self-image. Definitely worth checking out. Shua watched a recent Netflix series from Britain called Cunk on Earth. A very condensed (and ridiculous) history of our planet starring Diane Morgan giving her unique take on this hunk of rock we live on.

The Thirteenth Floor was a less well known sci-fi virtual reality flick than The Matrix, but there are some great aspects to it as well. Check it out on Sci-Fi Saturdays on Retrozap.com. Enjoy Life!

One way to make Valentine’s Day special for that someone you love is to plan a retro-movie-themed date. Last year we had some fun nights planned that surely led to life-long relationships. This year’s episode is more of a cautionary tale. We give you some great themes, with some warnings of what you should absolutely avoid (unless you’re trying to get rid of them)

Themes include:

“The Sixteen Candles”

“The Back to the Future”

“The Breakfast Club”

“The Brendan Fraser”

“The Die Hard”

“The Splash”

“The Arnold Schwarzenegger”

What we’re Enjoying

Jay has been getting very Retro (Retro-squared?) by revisiting some Bob Hope movies from way back in 1941. Caught in the Draft and Nothing but the Truth were some fun films that remind you about a time gone by and how the past can be entertaining. Shua really committed himself when he decided to binge all of the extended versions of Peter Jackson’s six-movie-spanning Tolkien stories. Love ‘em or leave ‘em, it can be fun to immerse yourself in Middle Earth and remember what the message of all the films relay.

Sci-Fi Saturdays/MCU Location Scout

The Matrix was a ground-breaking movie in so many ways. This week Jay looks at the story, effects, and influence of Keanu Reeve’s classic Alice in Digital-Wonderland story. Check it out on Sci-Fi Saturdays on Retrozap.com. Plus, now that SFS has reached 1999 it’s time to remember the hype, politics, and complexity of Star Wars-Episode I, The Phantom Menace, coming this Saturday.

Enjoy Toys!

One of the most wide-spread successes of toys has got to be LEGO. But it didn’t start out like that. This week we look back to the humble beginnings when Ole Kirk Christiansen took his bankrupt carpentry business and made it into something that would change the industry.

It wasn’t an instant success though. There were many hardships, failed ideas, and more factory fires than most people could come back from. Luckily, his son Godtfred (like his father) was a persistent and determined creator. Once he was inspired by a set of building blocks he saw at a convention, they bought a plastic injection molding machine and the rest is history.

Through some very clever innovations with the designs, LEGO began to see some success and spread across the globe. By the 1950s their basic sets were found in many toy boxes across the United States.

The long history of the company lends itself well to our game “Just in the Brick of Time”. Jay will try to identify the decade some of the LEGO milestones took place. You can play along too!

Six-String Samurai is a wild and crazy mixture of rock and post-apocalyptic movies. Sound like a strange combination? You’re not wrong. Check it out on Sci-Fi Saturdays on Retrozap.com. Plus, as Sci-Fi Saturdays approaches the end of the millennium, it’s time to rewatch an influential classic, The Matrix, coming this Saturday.

Enjoy TV!

In the early 70s, our live-action sci-fi was limited. When ABC adapted Martin Caidin’s 1972 novel, Cyborg into a TV series, it didn’t take long for us to get hooked. Steve Austin is an astronaut who suffered life threatening injuries in a test flight. The government rebuilt him using new bionic technology. Both legs, his right arm, and an eye were all replaced with super-human abilities. From there he completed missions nobody else could.

Over the 5 seasons, he interacted with aliens, robots, BigFoot, and more! Plus, his childhood sweetheart, in a spinoff-creating coincidence, had a similar accident that gave her bionic body parts and her own series.

Plus, there were toys that had action features boys had never dreamed of before. Power lift, bionic eye, and fashionable red track suit. The Six Million Dollar Man was the perfect set up for the imagination of the 70s kid.

What we’re Enjoying

After watching season 1 of Willow on Disney+, Jay went back and remembered how fun Willow the movie was. A fantasy adventure with humor and a lot of heart. Shua has been immersed in a Star Trek soundtrack playlist on Spotify that includes music from just about every show, movie, and project you could think of. A nice variety of sci-fi tunes for your daily listen.

Sci-Fi Saturdays/MCU Location Scout

In 1998 Aerosmith would close their eyes, just to hear you breathing. Creepy? Not when you realize it’s the soundtrack from the Bruce Willis, Ben Affleck disaster flick Armageddon. As hokey and over the top as this Michael Bay movie is, it’s still a lot of fun. Check it out on Sci-Fi Saturdays on Retrozap.com. Plus, stay tuned for a little known post-apocalyptic film called Six-String Samurai, coming this Saturday.

Enjoy Music!

Music has been a determining factor of a culture since Ringo Starr discovered it as a Caveman. But in the 80s it seemed to take it to a whole other level. This week we take a look at where we got our music and what was popular.

This week, 40 years ago, Men at Work had the number one spot with Down Under. And while Australia was all the rage at this time, it was just one of the many songs we would keep track of on the charts when we listened to Casey Kasem bring it to us each week on American Top 40.

While listening to the radio was nice, we couldn’t pick the songs we wanted. So we headed into the record stores for our records and tapes. Enjoy Stuff will share the history and origins of some of our listening vessels on this week’s show.

Plus, we remember some of the iconic stores that were enjoying their heyday in the malls and other venues across the country. It’s a musical episode for the scrapbook. Come join us as we Enjoy Music!

It contains some great anecdotes about Martin’s time in the movies and some fun cartoon strips illustrated by New Yorker cartoonist Harry Bliss. Jay spent New Year’s Eve watching the new Rian Johnson movie Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery with Daniel Craig and a slew of other great celebrities. It’s a fun mystery with some unexpected twists

Enjoy Video Games!

In 1983 the video game industry was riding a wave of success that began stronger than Piston Joe’s punches. That would soon change, but as kids we had no idea what was coming, we were just enjoying the creative games that came out that year. Vector-based legends like Star Wars and Star Trek, iconic sequels like Donkey Kong Jr., and innovative classics like Dragon’s Lair dominated the arcades. Jay and Shua look back at these and some other home system games that would soon close a successful chapter in digital history.
