What we’re Enjoying

Shua was extremely and pleasantly surprised how incredible the new Seth Macfarlane Ted series is. Crude humor to be sure, but a ton of heart embedded within so many laughs. You can see it on the Peacock network. Jay explored another historical site in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania called the Gettysburg Diorama Museum. It’s a really cool recreation of the famous Civil War battle that gives you a very in-depth look at the soldiers who fought and died there.

Sci-Fi Saturdays

This week on Sci-Fi Saturdays Jay knows what you’re going to do wrong before you do it because of his precogs. You can find them in the 2002 Steven Spielberg, Tom Cruise movie Minority Report. In addition to being an action packed sci-fi romp, it also had an interesting take on our future. Was it accurate? Check it out on Sci-Fi Saturdays. He has also been updating locations from Marvel TV and movies, including Echo, the Agents of SHIELD, and Agent Carter series. Play around with the interactive map on MCULocationScout.com. Plus, you can tune in to  SHIELD: Case Files where Jay and Shua break down each episode of the Echo series and more.

Enjoy Movies!

For more than 50 years Kevin Kline has been making movies in a variety of genres. From his stage beginnings he gave us the Pirate King in Gilbert and Sullivan’s Pirates of Penzance and showed off his musical chops.

He moved on to some dramatic roles and often starred alongside some other big names like Glenn Close, Jeff Goldblum, and William Hurt in movies like The Big Chill. And a western called Silverado with Kevin Costner, Scott Glenn, Brian Dennehy, and more.

That’s where he met John Cleese and they connected to make the legendary comedy A Fish Called Wanda with Michael Palin and Jamie Lee Curtis. He took home a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for that.

Romantic comedies, dramas, family films, and even cartoon voice overs. Kevin Kline has something for everyone.

Aliens have been a part of movies since we shot ourselves to the moon in 1902. They are the perfect tool for an allegory about our society. Whether our visitors from another world are benevolent or hell-bent on world domination, it's irresistible to sit back and watch. Jovial Jay and Shua test their knowledge of those cinematic extraterrestrials on Enjoy Stuff!

Grab your tinfoil hats and welcome signs as we look back at the history of aliens in movies.

Shua has been revisiting the Monsterverse Godzilla movies following his viewing of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. It’s fun to watch our cities get smooshed.

Sci-Fi Saturdays

This week on Sci-Fi Saturdays Jay tackles Star Wars Episode II Attack of the Clones. It’s a movie that many of us are familiar with, and he digs deep with insights and observations that make it a pleasure to revisit. He has also been updating locations from Marvel TV and movies, including Echo, the Agents of SHIELD, and Agent Carter series. Play around with the interactive map on MCULocationScout.com. Enjoy Movies!

Ack ack ack! Which means “We come in peace!” At least that’s what I assume those little green men are saying. Over the years, nay decades, nay CENTURY we have enjoyed exploring the possibilities of what other lifeforms could be out ….there!

And our imagination has covered the spectrum from friendly ETs who just want to share our Reese’s Pieces to Martians that just want to use us as fertilizer (well, I hope you got your vaccinations creeps!) We look at some memorable alien stories throughout history and what has influenced (or been influenced by) them.

Next the boys play a game of GarbleBlitz: Alien Edition. Each give one word clues and the other has to guess the alien or movie they came from. Join us for some extraterrestrial fun and bring that disco organ so you can engage in some riveting musical conversations.

Would you have gotten on that ship with Roy Neary? What could we send to Mars besides women? What we’re Enjoying

Timeless Heroes: Harrison Ford and Indiana Jones on Disney+ is a respectful look back at Ford’s career, with a significant spotlight on his most legendary character, Indiana Jones. Shua has been meaning to check this out, but he had no idea just how great it was going to be. Jay dove head first into the new Marvel series Echo. A different take on a Marvel hero and the first of the Spotlight series on Disney+.

Sci-Fi Saturdays

This week on Sci-Fi Saturdays Jay explores a movie that was market more to a younger audience, but it is good fun for all ages. Clockstoppers (2002) tells the story of a teen that gets access to a watch that can slow time. There’s bad guys of course, and it’s up to the youth of the early 2000’s to save the day! Sounds simple, but it made for a good adventure.

Ray Harryhausen was the master of stop-motion animation, creating some of the most iconic fantasy movies of all time and inspiring generations of creators. Jovial Jay and Shua film one frame at a time as they look back at the work of this legend on Enjoy Stuff!

It’s time to indulge in some retro movies! These classics were brought to life through the genius of Ray Harryhausen and his creative creature design and animation techniques.

What we’re Enjoying

Jay has been impressed with the new Percy Jackson and the Olympians series on Disney+. It’s a great adaptation that is true to the first book and seems to be creatively exploring the characters. Shua is listening to Conan himself narrate his own book. Arnold Schwarzenegger shares some motivational life tips with his new book Be Useful: Seven Tools for Life. You may be surprised how useful some of his tips are.

Sci-Fi Saturdays

This week on Sci-Fi Saturdays Jay goes back (and forward) in time with the 2002 adaptation of the classic HG Wells story The Time Machine, starring Guy Pierce. Although some aspects are changed, it is a pretty good story with some surprisingly good themes. He has also been updating locations from Marvel TV and movies, including the Agents of SHIELD and Agent Carter series. Play around with the interactive map on MCULocationScout.com. Plus, you can tune in to  SHIELD: Case Files where Jay and Shua break down each episode of the Hawkeye series and more.

Enjoy Movies!

Don’t stop-motion believin’! In 1933 a 13 year old Ray Harryhausen saw the movie King Kong and it forever changed the way we would experience movies. It inspired him to experiment in techniques of stop motion animation that he would continually improve throughout his entire career.

His impressive resume includes classics like Mysterious Island, Jason and the Argonauts, and of course Clash of the Titans. Many of his movies aren’t even remembered for who starred in or directed them, but for Ray’s special effects. His patented Dynamation technique of incorporating his stop motion creatures enhanced all these movies in a way that made you feel like you were part of the dream.

Countless creators were inspired by Ray’s effects, such as Steven Spielberg, Terry Gilliam, Peter Jackson, Tim Burton, and of course the man who carried the mantle, visual effects legend Phil Tippett. Their movies continued to evolve Ray’s techniques including how CGI even works today. We are all indebted to Mr. Harryhausen and are grateful for his work.

Which of Ray Harryhausen’s works do you like? Have you ever made a stop motion movie? First person that emails me with the subject line, “Release the Kraken!” will get a special mention on the show.  Let us know. Come talk to us in the Discord channel or send us an email to EnjoyStuff@RetroZap.com
